Advocating for children since 1988
If you suspect your child could benefit from professional help in the area of mental health, you are probably correct! Today’s world is challenging for adults, and even more so for children and adolescents. Sometimes it is merely emotional support that is needed, but challenging to find. Often your child’s behavior is concerning, or simply confusing. Counseling can offer the help you and your child need. Counseling young children with play therapy and art therapy allows a child therapist to “speak their language” and give them the encouragement they require to address their issues. Adolescents often benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy or solution-focused therapy, as clarifying the root of their fears is often what is needed to change their personal path.
About Natalie
Natalie Sims spent 17 years volunteering in the Miami-Dade School system in various capacities, always with the goal of improving children’s lives. One of Natalie’s passions has always been as a supporter of children in the foster care system. She was a panel member and chairperson for Foster Care Review for several years, and it was here she became convinced that it was the right decision to leave her business career behind and become a child advocate full-time. After obtaining a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University, Natalie spent three years working for agencies in Broward County providing counseling for children with an emphasis on treating trauma. Her belief is being able to help a child is life’s greatest gift.

Areas of Practice
Children (ages 6-12 yrs)
When working with children ages 6 to 9, I often utilize Play Therapy, Sand Tray Therapy, Art Therapy, and sometimes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Often younger children need to tell their story and express their feelings without using words. Experience is critical in the interpretation of non-verbal communication from children. Allowing children to express themselves spontaneously is vital to child therapy.
Young adults (ages 18+)
One of the more difficult life phases is transitioning from teen to adult. This is an especially turbulent time and often emotions bleed into our everyday lives in a subtle manner. It is not uncommon to become irritable, anxious, withdrawn or even just indecisive. Obtaining clarity is often just the key needed to become calmer, more confident and content with a hefty dose of joy thrown in for a more fulfilling life.
adolescents AND PRE-TEENS (ages 10 and up)
I do not believe in cookie-cutter therapy. While Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is generally the treatment of choice by insurance companies, and often a good fit, it might not be what your child needs. In addition to CBT, I employ Solution-Focused Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Mindfulness Therapies and Narrative Therapy. The goal is help your child find solutions and develop coping skills if needed.
